During Term 4 Concept on Global World students explored different ways societies operate and how life is not equal . Kei 4 decided to hit the road and visit 4 community groups around the city to learn how we could make a difference.

We arrived at the preschool and waited for the children to gather before heading to the turf. In small groups, we played games with them, helping to foster friendships that will be important as they transition to primary school. It was heartwarming to see their excitement and energy, and after returning to the preschool, we waited as they all stood and sang a waiata with actions.

Next, we visited 0800 Hungry, a food distribution center that supports families in need. After a briefing about how the organization operates, we were assigned different tasks. Some of us packed food parcels for families, which provided an eye-opening perspective on how little some families receive to sustain themselves. It made us reflect on the importance of generosity and how even small efforts can make a big difference. Others decanted laundry detergent into smaller bottles, made up bags of seeds, restocked shelves with donations, and prepared small packets of tea and toilet paper. Each family would receive enough food to support them for a week.

After a busy morning, we headed to the community garden, where we had a chance to relax, enjoy lunch, and take in the peaceful surroundings. The garden was beautiful, with vibrant plants and fresh air, offering a tranquil escape. We wandered around, exploring its many features, and even snacked on berries straight from the plants. This stop was both restful and inspiring, showing how much can be achieved when a community comes together. The Phillipstown Community Hub harvests produce every day to provide free food for the community. While we were there, they were digging a new vegetable patch that will produce 60,000 items of produce annually.

Our final stop was the Ronald McDonald House, which provides accommodation and support for families with children in the hospital. The staff warmly welcomed us and gave us a tour of the facilities, sharing moving stories about the families they’ve helped. After the tour, we stepped outside to brainstorm ways we could support their mission. We wrote down ideas for gathering donations and spreading awareness, which made us realize how small acts of kindness can have a big impact on families going through tough times.

Overall, we learned a lot and felt incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to give back.
