During Weeks 3 and 4 of this term, all year 7 students had the opportunity to partake in SwimSafe lessons held at Jellie Park.
The students completed ten 30 minute sessions over the course of 2 weeks. During this time they were taught a range of skills around water safety, confidence in the water, how to survive when tipped from a boat, what a current and whirlpool feel like and experience what it is like to swim with clothes on.
It was incredible to see how quickly they increased their swimming ability and confidence in the water, and it was a pleasure seeing our confident swimmers gain further skills as well.
A huge thank you to the Cobham Intermediate Board of Trustees for allowing this opportunity to happen.
Thank you, also to the staff at Jellie Park for their enjoyable sessions, fun instructors and their never-ending patience.
Here are some quotes from students:
“I enjoyed the whirlpool because you spin around with your friends.”
“I learned that wearing pyjamas was really hard to swim in.”
“The opportunity to be safe in the water was a great experience.”
“Knowing how to be safe in the water with clothes on was a good experience.”
“I learned how to jump into the water without getting it up my nose.”
“I learned what a swimming beacon is.”
We are excited to have the year 8’s attend these sessions next term.
