Cobham Intermediate recently made its mark at the 2025 Zespri AIMS Games, with 70 students competing across 11 different sports. From the swimming pool to the golf course and everywhere in between, our students not only showcased their athletic talents but also embodied the school’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, and Pride.
Individual Athletes
Our athletes brought home a remarkable number of medals. In swimming, Jenna Borea was a standout, setting a new Canterbury and AIMS Games record in the 200m IM. She also won several other gold and silver medals, and was named the overall swimmer for 12 yeard olds at the games. Ethan Jiao also secured multiple individual silver and bronze medals. On the golf course, Julian Chen won gold in his individual event and teamed up with Samuel Zhang for a team gold. The tennis duo of Tatiana and Juan also celebrated a gold medal victory in doubles. This backed up Juan’s result of 3rd in the singles. Our table tennis team finshed up in 3rd place with Matt, Hon, Rex and Jimmy. Cobham was identified at this tournament as one of the schools with the longest relationship with AIMS Games.
Team Sports
Our team sports demonstrated incredible heart and resilience throughout the tournament.
-
Hockey: Our mixed hockey team, led by their dedicated coach, showed true resilience and determination. After a tough loss early in the week, they rallied, made tactical improvements, and played some outstanding hockey for the remainder of the tournament. The team’s positive energy, support for each other, and fierce competitive spirit were highlights of their campaign.
-
Netball: The netball girls had an unforgettable week, battling torrential rain in their first game and going on to win all their pool matches. They secured a spot in the top 32 before finishing a fantastic 28th out of 122 teams. Beyond the court, they cheered on the hockey, basketball, and futsal teams and they sang their hearts out in the van. Our van got stuck in the mud twice, we went the beach, and managed a spot of shopping at the mall between games. Downtime was spent playing monopoly deal and volleyball, and getting to know each other.
-
Futsal: The boys’ futsal team showed incredible grit and determination. After a challenging start with two pool losses, they went on a remarkable run, winning their next seven games in a row to finish in 49th place. The team’s growing passion for the sport, strong teamwork, and support for their fellow Cobham athletes were a credit to them. Alongside their own matches, they got out to support Cobham in a range of other sports, proudly cheering on our Netball, Hockey, Badminton, and Table Tennis teams. Watching and backing their schoolmates quickly became a priority between games.
-
Basketball: The boys basketball team were a tight and slick unit. They knew their job and what they were there to do. They had some great wins and a couple of loses and just missed out on the top 32. The boys ended up finishing 3rd in the Plate Division.
