Search and Seizure Policy

OBJECTIVES

To ensure that all students are protected from items/substances which might be harmful, such as prohibited items as outlined in the School Prospectus or items that are forbidden by law to be taken to school, e.g. liquor, drugs, weapons.

GUIDELINES

  1. If a staff member impounds an article from a student, it must be stored in a place where it is unlikely to be stolen, lost or damaged.
  2. For security reasons, the article may be given to the office staff or Principal to hold for collection.
  3. The staff member must either return the item that day or inform the parent/caregiver that the item may be retrieved from the School Principal who will explain why it was impounded.
  4. If these guidelines are followed the School will be responsible for the security of the item, otherwise the staff member impounding the item will be.
  5. Searches of a student’s person or property are not permitted. Should a search be considered necessary, the situation must be referred to the Principal for the appropriate involvement of parents/caregivers and/or Police.
