Health Policy

INTRODUCTION

The School will provide a positive learning environment and promote a health programme which will enable students to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. Students will develop their skills in relating to other members of the community.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To focus on building self esteem and relating to others as requested by our parent community.
  2. To develop understanding of how food, sleep, exercise and relaxation contribute to growth and well-being and prevent stress and illness.
  3. To encourage students to show concern for their own and others’ safety.
  4. To promote a knowledge of community health services.
  5. To provide opportunities for students to take part in activities that promote cultural respect and contribute to the health and welfare of the community.
  6. To understand changes associated with puberty and the associated health care needs.
  7. To provide opportunities for students to take part in activities which promote healthy decision-making in regard to personal body care.

GUIDELINES

  1. The two year health plan, including sexuality programmes, is to be agreed on, and reassessed, by the School and its community every two years.
  2. Health Education programmes will be carefully planned and monitored so that health teaching is sensitive to different gender, cultural and socio-economic needs and build on the attitudes and skills students have already acquired.
  3. All teachers are expected to be good role models, promote healthy practices and be informed about current health issues.
  4. The Health Co-ordinator will be responsible for developing and co-ordinating programmes, making resources accessible to teachers, and providing school-based teacher training.
  5. Parents will be consulted in devising and implementing Health Education programmes and provision will be made for parents to withdraw their students from sex education programmes by a written application to the Principal if they wish.
  6. N.Z. Police Department educators will be involved in the implementation of keeping safe and road safety units.
  7. Close links will be made with health agencies in the community for joint health promotion, e.g. New Zealand Family Planning Association.
