Health Policy
INTRODUCTION
The School will provide a positive learning environment and promote a health programme which will enable students to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. Students will develop their skills in relating to other members of the community.
OBJECTIVES
- To focus on building self esteem and relating to others as requested by our parent community.
- To develop understanding of how food, sleep, exercise and relaxation contribute to growth and well-being and prevent stress and illness.
- To encourage students to show concern for their own and others’ safety.
- To promote a knowledge of community health services.
- To provide opportunities for students to take part in activities that promote cultural respect and contribute to the health and welfare of the community.
- To understand changes associated with puberty and the associated health care needs.
- To provide opportunities for students to take part in activities which promote healthy decision-making in regard to personal body care.
GUIDELINES
- The two year health plan, including sexuality programmes, is to be agreed on, and reassessed, by the School and its community every two years.
- Health Education programmes will be carefully planned and monitored so that health teaching is sensitive to different gender, cultural and socio-economic needs and build on the attitudes and skills students have already acquired.
- All teachers are expected to be good role models, promote healthy practices and be informed about current health issues.
- The Health Co-ordinator will be responsible for developing and co-ordinating programmes, making resources accessible to teachers, and providing school-based teacher training.
- Parents will be consulted in devising and implementing Health Education programmes and provision will be made for parents to withdraw their students from sex education programmes by a written application to the Principal if they wish.
- N.Z. Police Department educators will be involved in the implementation of keeping safe and road safety units.
- Close links will be made with health agencies in the community for joint health promotion, e.g. New Zealand Family Planning Association.
