Gifted and Talented Policy
INTRODUCTION
The school will provide challenging, extension, opportunities to empower identified gifted and talented students.
OBJECTIVES
- To foster a school environment which supports and acknowledges the achievements and specific needs of the gifted and talented.
- To identify students who are gifted and talented, as early as possible, using a range of measures.
- To provide appropriate, differentiated programmes and opportunities to meet the academic, social and emotional challenges of providing for gifted and talented students.
- To provide ongoing professional learning and development for staff.
- To provide appropriate resources and opportunities to meet the learning needs of gifted and talented students.
- To have a management structure to ensure ongoing monitoring, support and development of gifted and talented programmes within the school.
GUIDELINES
- The school will foster a positive, responsive environment where gifted and talented students are valued and feel safe.
- A range of objective and subjective measures will be used to identify gifted and talented students in many areas. These may include:
- information gathered from previous schools
- school and class testing, standardised tests, varying types of assessment
- psychological assessment
- parent information
- self nomination
- performances, presentations, auditions
- observations, feedback from staff members
- To assist in meeting the learning needs of gifted and talented students:
- most identified students will be clustered into groups or classes with students of similar higher learning abilities or be given the opportunity to join an enquiry class
- teachers will provide challenging, differentiated programmes with scope for extended learning
- students will be taught a variety of thinking skills methods and approaches to learning
- programmes will include extension, to challenge the student, and enrichment, to broaden understanding
- opportunities for extension of the talented will be provided across the curriculum including elite musical groups, sporting teams, artistic groups, technology
- profoundly gifted students may be given the opportunity of mentoring, in chosen areas.
- The school will provide opportunities for professional learning in the field of teaching the gifted and talented, as part of its staff development programme.
- This may involve the use of internal expertise, specialists such as advisors and opportunities for external, professional development
- Staff will be kept up-to-date with new developments in the research of gifted and talented
- The school will continue to update resources necessary to meet the learning needs of gifted and talented students. Opportunities for students to develop their gifts and talents in the wider community e.g. leadership courses, speech competitions, music festivals, will be provided.
- The Principal will appoint a Co-ordinator of Gifted and Talented who will meet with those involved to oversee programmes operating within the school and help plan future developments.
- A register of Gifted and Talented students will be compiled. This will include students who are:
- profoundly gifted who require special programming within classes
- accelerated by one year or more on calendar age
- underachieving gifted and talented students
- able to be catered for in a differentiated class programme
- students in mixed ability classes with identified talents in specific areas.
